Thornton, William

William Thornton is believed to be a pseudonym for Alexander Hogg, the publisher of Thornton's History of London (1784), of which we carry a stock of the maps and prints. These include a number of decorative Ward maps of the City of London, and handsome plans of London as a whole. This was one of several surveys of London published in the late 18th century which tended to have a number of similar plates in common. Some of the plates in Thornton's History are derived from Harrison's earlier New and Universal History of London, and others from Cooke's Modern Universal British Traveller and Noorthouck's New History of London, while some of the plates were later reissued in Walpoole's New British Traveller.
